My First CrossFit Competition As A Coach

This past Saturday we had 4 athletes from CrossFit Petram compete in CrossFit Equity's Spring Fling. This was my first time at a competition on the sidelines as athletes that I train and coach put their fitness to the test.

I could not have been more proud of my athletes. Each one rose to the occasion and even though they were in the Rx division for their first competition they completely killed it.

The day also brought lessons for these athletes. During the strength event our team got creamed by the very strong and experienced field. Building strength takes time and it was less than two months ago when our team decided to compete.

After the event I talked to each one of my athletes and instead of being discouraged they were fired up and hungry. They wanted to come into the next event and hit it harder and they wanted to get back into our gym on Monday to get stronger.

As I reflect on the day it wasn't the athletes competing out on the floor that I was most proud of but the ones that took the time out of their busy Saturday to come out and cheer. CrossFit Equity is about a 30 minute drive for many of our members but we still had nearly a dozen show up throughout the day. That type of comradery really speaks volumes for the type of community that our members have built.

The Take away

Signing up for a competition is scary. There will always be athletes that are stronger and faster than you, but its not about them. It's about putting your full effort into it, celebrating your accomplishments and learning from your failures.

It's scary and hard, but definitely worth it.
